Welcome to the winter issue of the e-newsletter
Despite continued uncertainty, the Michaelmas term ended in a relatively normal way. We have been able to continue holding events such as the Alumni Winter Drinks, Carol Services, and Christmas dinners to name just a few. The end-of-term events that marked the Bridgemas season were a well-deserved celebration. Students enjoyed a chilly, but festive, Carol service with the Choir in First Court, the novice, senior, and alumni crews took to the water for the annual Fairbairns Cup, and alumni hosted their own 10+1 year reunion dinner for those who matriculated in 2010.

Professor Bayly Awarded Prestigious State Honour
Fellow Professor Susan Bayly has been awarded a highly prestigious State Honour by the Government of Vietnam. The 'For the Cause of Culture’ medal has been awarded in recognition of Professor Bayly's services to leading Vietnamese cultural institutions.
This is one of the most highly-ranked awards in Vietnam's system, and it is rare for a foreigner to be acknowledged in this way. One of the contributions the award marks is Professor Bayly's role in helping to organise Vietnam’s first ever loan of a national art treasure, the National Fine Arts Museum’s famous 20th-century lacquer painting entitled Gióng, for an exhibition in 2013 which was generously co-sponsored by Christ’s. More generally it is an acknowledgement of the use Professor Bayly has made of her anthropological skills and knowledge to foster understanding of Vietnam's wonderfully rich cultural heritage. Professor Bayly was awarded her certificate and medal at a virtual ceremony.

Save the date - May Ball 2022
The May Ball Co-Presidents, Sam Grankin and Pippa Prendergast-Coates, are excited to announce that next year's May Ball will be held on 21 June 2022. Alumni will be able to apply for tickets using the ballot system, which will open on 18 January and run through to 30 January. Look out for more details coming to you via email in the New Year. In the meantime, you can stay up to date with the May Ball Committee’s announcements via www.christsmayball.co.uk, facebook.com/christsmayball, or instagram.com/christsmayball. They will be revealing the currently-top-secret theme on 28th January 2022!
Admission of Scholars & Commemoration of Benefactors
One of the most important dates in the College calendar is the annual Admission of Scholars and Commemoration of Benefactors. We were delighted to be able to hold the ceremony in person this year and as such, the scholars felt the significance of the occasion all the more. Following the excellent exam results in the summer, the Master admitted 94 new scholars at the ceremony in the Chapel.

Old Library Exhibition - Poetry and Place.
Alumni are warmly invited to visit the Old Library’s latest exhibition, ‘Poetry and Place in Cambridge’. The exhibition celebrates the rich history of poetry about Cambridge, focusing on poems and poets concerned with the places of the city. From Geoffrey Chaucer to the lesser-known Mary Davys, Sylvia Plath to William Wordsworth, the city's students, residents, and visitors have been moved to write about different areas of Cambridge. As well as transporting readers as far as Grantchester and Trumpington, these poems shed new light on central locations, such as the Mill Pond and Market Hill.
The exhibition includes activities for children and is accompanied by a self-guided walking tour, so you can visit the sites found in each poem. All are welcome to visit this free exhibition between 2-4 pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays (closed from 22 December to 5 January). The exhibition ends on 17 February 2022.
