Economics Fellowship

Christ’s holds an unparalleled record in Economics across the Cambridge Colleges. Over the last ten years or so, our students' performance has been at the very top of the University’s Economics league tables, and so is outstanding even by Cambridge’s exacting standards. Our students are happy and successful, going on to highly sought after jobs in banking, consulting, and the government, and onto post-graduate degrees.

Small group supervisions remain key to our approach. Teaching in the groups of two or three means we can tailor our efforts to individual students and make sure they are fully engaged in the learning process. This approach continues to set Cambridge apart from other institutions. But, small group supervisions are very resource intensive. For the last ten years or so, this job at Christ’s was done by two excellent teaching Fellows in Economics, Dr William Peterson, and Dr Julia Shvets. Following the retirement of William Peterson, Christ’s needs to fund a new Fellowship in Economics, to continue its small group teaching.

In 2019 we secured temporary funding from the University’s Faculty of Economics and the Janeway Fund for Economics. Christ’s matched these funds out of its endowment to create temporary Fellowship in Economics, in the first instance. The post is intended as a several-year early career post for a young academic. It has been designed to give the College the teaching it needs at the same time as fostering top quality academic research by the post-holder, and serving as a spring board for them in securing a good permanent job.

However, the current funding is running out and so the post will have to end soon. In order to continue to provide the outstanding teaching in Economics that Christ’s is known for and to support young talent in Economics, we need to raise £1.5 million to endow this Fellowship.
