Dr Richard Mortier has been elected as College President, from the beginning of the 2019/20 academic year.
During the Rugby World Cup in Japan, our alumnus Rowan Kitt (m. 1991) was one of four Television Match Officials, referees watching the match from multiple camera angles, who are called upon to assist the on-pitch referee in making accurate decisions on difficult issues. Annilese Miskimmon (m. 1992) was recently announced as the new artistic director of the English National Opera. Chris Mason (m. 1998), has been announced as the new host of BBC Radio 4's 'Any Questions?'. At Christ's, Maisie Hulbert (m. 2014) founded Sing Inside, an initiative providing singing workshops in prisons which has expanded across the UK. Now Chief Executive, she is keen to connect with alumni interested in attending workshops, sharing contacts or advice, or assisting with funding.
Welcome to our new students
In October, we welcomed 118 new undergraduate students, studying 27 different subjects. 72.4% of home students were from maintained sector schools, higher than the University average of 68%.
Access Report
Our fantastic Admissions Team have been busy visiting schools around the country, running partnerships with our link area schools, organising residentials, and welcoming prospective applicants to College for Open Days. Our aim is to admit students of the highest intellectual potential, irrespective of social, religious or financial considerations. You can read our most recent Access Report here.
Tompkins Table
Christ's is once again top of the Tompkins Table, after a truly outstanding set of 2018/19 examination results. The proportion of first class final-year results was a magnificent 51% and the proportion of final-year students receiving a II.1 or higher was 94%. We are immensely proud of all our students, and very grateful for the support they receive from our Fellows and staff within College.
News from the Old Library
The Library exhibition, 'Here Be Dragons! Mapping Lands Near and Far', showcases some of the many diverse maps and plans from the Old Library's collections. What began as a curious look into cupboards has transformed into a journey through the history of cartography, ranging from the importance of navigation to the inherent bias of map-makers, and looking at the power maps have to fuel authors’ imaginations. If you visit, you’ll see works from the great masters of cartography, Mercator and Ortelius, wonder at a Roman road-map, and even take a peep at the streets of Cambridge as they existed 400 years ago. Visitors to the exhibition have come from all over the UK and all the way around the globe, as you can see from the pins placed on the visitors' map. The exhibition is open to the public Tuesdays and Thursdays, 2:00-4:00pm, but alumni may visit at other times by appointment (please email: library@christs.cam.ac.uk).
Gardens
The fantastic work of our gardening team has been recognised in a new book 'Cambridge College Gardens' by Tim Richardson, with photos by Clive Boursnell and Marcus Harper. The planting and re-design work in Third Court is now finished and has had time to mature. If you're nearby College, pop in and take a look!
Christ's Lifescience Network
On 29th October, we held the inaugural meeting of the Christ’s College Lifescience Network, which aims to connect alumni, undergraduate and postgraduate students (of any subject) and the broader College community who are interested in the field. The event had outstanding speakers – Martin Frost (m. 1982), CEO of CMR Surgical and 2018 Cambridge Independent ‘CEO of the Year’ and Jack Feltham (m. 2010), former Post Doc at the Mellor Lab in Oxford and key member of ‘Pint of Science’ – and was very well attended. Thank you to all the alumni who came to the event and especially to Tim Leonard (m. 2001) and Duncan Bull (m. 2005) for hosting the event at Kilburn & Strode.
Charles Darwin and Galapagos Islands Fund
We held an event to mark the 10th Anniversary Celebration of the Charles Darwin and Galapagos Islands Fund. We were truly delighted that Sir David Attenborough was able to join us for the celebration, as he was present for the launch of the Fund in 2009. The Fund promotes scientific linkage between Christ's College and the Galapagos Islands, especially through a Research Fellowship at Christ's, in recognition of the crucial time spent on the islands by our alumnus, Charles Darwin.
Planning permission
We are delighted to report that the planning application for our new student accommodation development has been approved by Cambridge City Council, so we are now able to move forwards with the project. Look out for more information on this over the coming months.
