Welcome to the Spring issue of the e-newsletter
This week the College has basked in glorious sunshine, and it has felt more like summer than spring! Around College there is a buzz of activity, and the gardens are bursting into bloom. On Wednesday we hosted a group of Year 12 students for a Biological Sciences Taster Day on Charles Darwin. The Day was themed around Darwin's life, work, and impact, with sessions given by Fellows in Natural Sciences, and a chance to chat to our current students. This event is part of the extensive programme of access and outreach Christ's runs. Later in the week we welcomed potential Historians to College for a Lady Margaret Beaufort Day, and this month there is a day focussed on John Milton, for those interested in studying English.
Professor David Klenerman Knighted
We were delighted to learn that Professor David Klenerman (Fellow) had been knighted in the New Year Honours for Services to Science, and for the Development of High Speed DNA Sequencing Technology. This is the latest in a string of honours for him, including a 2018 Royal Medal from the Royal Society, following his election as a Fellow of the Royal Society in 2012, and as a Fellow of the Academy of Medical Sciences in 2015.
The 2019 Telephone Campaign
Thank you once more to everyone who supported last year's Telephone Campaign. The approaching Easter holidays signal the beginning of our annual Telephone Campaign, and our team of student callers is looking forward to speaking with a large number of alumni over the coming weeks. As in previous years, they will be raising funds for the College's Student Support Initiative.
All the gifts given in our Telephone Campaigns really add up; but, perhaps even more importantly, every donation helps us demonstrate the wide base of support Christ's has among our alumni, which in turn can helps us attract funding from other sources. Last year, for example, we were able to attract an additional £12,500 from a generous donor, due to the number of regular gifts secured during calling.
Calling will take place from 18 to 31 March, and we really hope that you are looking forward to your conversations as much as the students are!
College News
Congratulations to Dr Maya Feile Tomes (Fellow), who has won two prizes for her PhD. She has been awarded the Hare Prize by the Faculty of Classics here in Cambridge, and the Association of Hispanists of Great Britain and Ireland & Spanish Embassy Thesis Prize.
Earlier this month, Dr David Trippett (Fellow) released a CD of his edition of Franz Liszt's lost opera, Sardanapalo, to great acclaim. The CD rose quickly to become the number 1 best-selling classical CD in the UK charts, and The Times declared it "torridly exciting … the work’s emergence changes music history … you wonder what heights were left to breach in the unwritten acts".
The College Choir will be visiting Singapore and New Zealand (North Island) this summer for its annual overseas tour. They are finalising concert venues and arrangements, and would be very pleased to hear from any alumni who are able to help with home-stays, by email at christschoir@gmail.com.
Congratulations to Tom Baarda (m. 2017) who has been awarded the Members' Greek Reading Prize and (jointly) the Members' Latin Reading Prize by the Faculty of Classics. Congratulations also to Claire Watters (m. 2017) and Fazal Shah (m. 2016) who were the joint winners of the Charles Blackham Memorial Prize for College Musicians. Our sportsmen and women are also achieving great results at Varsity level with, for example, Lili Pierret (m. 2015) and Jack Neill (m. 2016) securing victories in the Gymnastics Varsity Competition (pictured below), and Caterina Quadrio Curzio (m. 2016) a member of the winning Mixed Lacrosse Team.
