Admission of Scholars
Professor Jane Stapleton was delighted to admit seventy one new scholars to Christ's in early December. The ceremony was held in the College Chapel and was celebrated at the annual Feast of Commemoration of Benefactors that evening. That we admitted so many scholars this year is perhaps no surprise since we came second in the Tompkins Table this summer. In June 2017, one third of the entire undergraduate population obtained a First. We are also one of only two Colleges which have, in the entire history of the modern Tompkins Table, always been in the upper half. This is indeed testimony to the hard work of our students and the excellent teaching by our Fellows.

Sporting Successes
Christ's sportsmen and women have been enjoying a very successful time of late. Most notably, four of our current students have been selected to trial for the prestigious Cambridge University boats. They are Miriam Apsley (m. 2013); Rebecca Dell (m. 2017); Tricia Smith (m. 2013 and current Vice President of the Cambridge University Women's Boat Club); Tom Strudwick (m. 2016). Both Miriam and Tricia learned to row at Christ's and the College is extremely proud of all four of them. Unfortunately, funding cuts are making it more and more difficult for students to pursue rowing to these levels. In the last year subs for both the Men and Women's clubs have more than doubled and the cost of the annul training camp has increased from £150 to £650. The increases run the risk of dissauding talented students from taking part.

In other boatie news, the Christ's Boathouse redevelopment is finally complete and was celebrated at an informal opening on 1 December. This coincided with the Fairbairns race and beer was very generously provided by Chris and Debbie Lloyd. This was followed by a celebratory cake and a hog roast in the evening, which gave alumni and their guests the rare opportunity to dine in the new section of the boathouse. The formal naming and opening of the building will take place in May.

College sport in general was celebrated at the Colours Dinner on 17 November. The event was attended by both alumni and students who had attained College Colours and as ever, it was a very enjoyable evening!

Christ's College Choir Tour
Christ’s Chapel Choir will be visiting the regions of Eastern and Central Canada on tour in July 2018 for around three weeks. They will fly to Quebec City and make their way to Toronto, passing through Montréal, Ottawa, Kingston and Niagara, as well as smaller towns in between. The full itinerary will be confirmed very soon. It would be wonderful to see alumni at the concerts and details of these will be circulated in due course. If you know of any churches along the route that might be keen to hold a concert, or of any groups that might be able to host the choir, this information would be hugely appreciated; it makes the process easier if students can stay with host families, not only because it saves their running costs, but also because it is a nice way for them to properly to get to know the areas they visit!
