Earl Louis Mountbatten of Burma (1900-1979)

 

 

British Admiral of the Fleet and statesman, Louis Mountbatten was the great-grandson of Queen Victoria.

In the Second World War, he was appointed chief of Combined Operations Command, playing a key role in the preparations for the D-Day landings. As Supreme Commander, South East Asia he successfully defeated the Japanese offensive into India and received the Japanese surrender at Singapore.

He served as Britain's last Viceroy of India, and subsequently held a series of top positions in the British Armed Forces, including Chief of the Defence Staff. Mountbatten was admitted to Christ's College in 1919, receiving an honorary doctorate and honorary fellowship in 1946.
