Swaranjit Singh

Swaranjit Singh was a left-handed batsman and right-arm medium-pace bowler who played for Eastern Punjab and Bengal in India, and Cambridge University and Warwickshire in England between 1950 and 1962. Born in Amritsar, India, Singh matriculated at Christ’s in 1953, and gained an MPhil in Economics.

In 1951, Singh captained the Eastern Punjab XI Cricket Team, and was declared best all-rounder in Indian universities, capturing 21 wickets and scoring 272 runs. He played for Punjab against Delhi in the Ranji Trophy, scoring 144 runs.

Singh began playing for the University of Cambridge Cricket Team in 1954 and played against such teams as Pakistan XI, Australian XI, and South African XI. In 1956 he toured the West Indies as a member of E.W. Swanton’s XI. While in the UK he played for Warwickshire County in the English County Championship, 1957. In 1958 he played for Marylebone Cricket Club. After returning to India in 1958, he captained Punjab North Zone.
