40th Anniversary of the Admission of Women to Christ's: Forthcoming Events

Saturday 6 July 2019: Forty Years of Women at Christ's Celebrations

The admission of the first female post-graduate students to Christ’s in 1978 and the admission of the first co-educational undergraduates in 1979 is a landmark in College history. We are planning to celebrate in a variety of ways over the course of the day.

11:00-12:00 Murray Edwards College. A Private Tour of The New Hall Art Collection; a collection of modern and contemporary art by women on display at Murray Edwards College. This is one of the largest and most significant collections of contemporary art by women in the world, receiving accreditation from the Arts Council England in 2018.

15:30-16:00 College Gardens. The Christ’s College gardeners will conduct a guided tour of the gardens including their contribution to the 40th anniversary celebrations in the form of a special display border in Second Court - a variety of marguerites and white roses in homage to the Lancastrian Lady Margaret Beaufort.

16:00-16:45 Tea in the Fellows’ Garden (Buttery if inclement).

17:00-18:00 Plumb Auditorium: Panel Discussion on the topic “Christ’s women and the mark they make”, with Jane Martinson (m. 1987, former Head of Media for Guardian News and Media, and the Marjorie Deane Professor of Financial Journalism at City University) as Chair.

19:00 for 19:30: Fellows’ Garden, followed by Hall The evening will commence with a pre-dinner drinks reception in the Fellows’ Garden (OCR if inclement) followed by a four course dinner in Hall at 19:30. This will also be an opportunity to view the wonderful "Lady Margaret" portrait exhibition in Hall.
