In response to the difficulties students might face as they begin their studies this term under Covid-19 restrictions, Cambridge University recently announced Digital Gateway Grants for incoming undergraduates from disadvantaged backgrounds. These grants, of up to £1,000, can be used to purchase IT equipment for their courses, in order to take part in the blend of in-person and online teaching in the new academic year. |

At Christ’s, through our Hardship Fund, we have expanded these Digital Grants in order to offer even further support; opening applications to a wider range of freshers than are eligible for the University scheme, as well as to all continuing undergraduates. As part of our student-led response to this pandemic, it has made a real impact on the lives of our students already, one recipient stating: ‘Thank you very much for the allocation of this grant, I am extremely grateful as it will help my family a large amount... This grant will make the purchase of a laptop for my course possible.’
We have only been able to offer these grants, alongside other specific funding for lockdown hardship such as the nearly £22,500 given in April to cover travel and quarantine, thanks to the generosity of our alumni in providing for these funds. They have helped us to ensure our students are not disadvantaged by these difficult times, and we are so grateful for this continued support.
