“The entrepreneurial alternative to corporate life - join three Christ’s Alumnae who run their own companies.”

Wednesday 25 May 2016

6.15pm to 9.00pm

Panel: Jane Graham Maw (m. 1982), Director at Graham Maw Christie, Nina Gold (m. 1982), Nina Gold Casting Ltd. and Penny Pullan (m. 1986), Director of Making Projects Work Ltd.

Wednesday 25 May at Fieldfisher, Riverbank House, 2 Swan Lane, London, EC4R 3TT (by kind invitation of Sarah Ellson (m. 1990)).

Join Penny, Nina and Jane to hear the stories of three Christ’s alumnae who decided that the corporate ladder wasn’t their cup of tea and set up their own businesses, swapping corporate life for something quite different. It’s not always been easy but it’s worked really well for all of them. This facilitative session isn’t just about our speakers though, it’s about you as well: your hopes, fears and dreams of doing things differently. The speakers will tell their stories, answer questions and then we will all break into groups to share ideas and challenges, find out what works and learn from one another. Whether running your own business is a distant dream or your current reality, we’d encourage you to come along and be part of the evening.

All of our speakers run companies as well as being involved in other things too (community, families, travelling) while doing work that stands out, both in the UK and internationally. At the same time, they enjoy a lifestyle that is far more flexible than normal. As Penny says: ’Why would I ever want to go back to working for a big company where someone else can change the strategy and everything shifts for me? I’m quite happy changing the world my own way, working whenever and wherever I choose.’

Jane Graham Maw has had over 20 years’ experience in the publishing industry.  She has worked as a commissioning editor, rights manager and publishing director and in 2005 she established Graham Maw Christie, a highly regarded boutique literary agency handling some 60 non-fiction authors.

Nina Gold is one of the UK’s top casting directors who has worked on projects as diverse as Game of Thrones, Wolf Hall, The Theory of Everything and Star Wars.  She started casting while still at Cambridge and this year will be the first recipient of the BAFTA award for Casting.

Dr Penny Pullan is a consultant, mentor, speaker and author, working with people grappling with tricky projects (virtual teams, risky, ambiguous requirements and disengaged stakeholders).  Her company is Making Projects Work Ltd. with clients across the world, from multinational companies to individual project managers and business analysts. Penny's third book, Virtual Leadership: Practical strategies for getting the best out of virtual work and virtual teams is out in September.
