In the spirit of Keynes, himself a prolific public servant, Sir Howard Davies has already given much time to a wide range of institutions; stints as the deputy governor of the Bank of England, and director of the London School of Economics, chairmanships of, among other bodies, the London Library and the Financial Services Authority (not to mention NatWest Bank), an involvement with the Tate as a trustee. He was also once a judge on the Booker Prize panel.

Suffice to say you’d need an extended stint at any table to cover such ground. So there is much serendipity that Sir Howard has agreed to be the latest guest at Christ’s London Circus, a salon supper gathering for alumni in the spirit of Keynes’ own circuses in Cambridge, back in the 1920s where ideas were swapped over fine food and wine. A moment in-between mouthfuls will certainly need to be saved for Sir Howard’s time as chairman of Nat West, which of late has required him to draw on diplomatic skills he honed in the Eighties at the Foreign Office as our ambassador to France’s private secretary. Secondment to the Treasury followed and the role of principal for monetary policy for two years when Nigel Lawson was Chancellor of the Exchequer, beginning Sir Howard’s now longstanding involvement with the world of finance.
