College News
In January we had the pleasure of announcing that Her Majesty the Queen had appointed the Master, Professor Jane Stapleton, an Honorary Queen's Counsel (QC Honoris Causa). Honorary QCs are awarded by exercise of the sovereign's royal prerogative to recognise those in the legal profession who have made a major contriubtion to, and impact on, the law of England and Wales and how it is advanced, outside the courtroom. The Lord Chancellor will preside over the appointment ceremony at Westminster Hall on 16 March 2020, where he will formally bestow the title of QC upon the Master and other new QCs.

Two of our alumni were similarly appointed as Queen's Counsel in January. Congratulations to both Andrew Allen (m. 1989) and Siward Atkins (m. 1989).

It was with great sadness that we annouced the death of our Fellow, Dr Douglas Ferguson, who died on 25 January 2020. Douglas was admitted to the Fellowship in 1975 and, most recently, the College celebrated his 80th birthday in April 2016 with a special lunch. He served the College as a Graduate Tutor from 1982 until 2000, as a Director of Studies in Medicine, as well as Fellow Librarian, and latterly chaired the JRF Scrutiny Committee alongside Professor Archie Campbell. He was also a highly respected and popular member of the Pharmacology Department in the University.
His funeral will take place in the College Chapel on Friday 28 February, at 12 noon, followed by light refreshments in Hall. Anyone who would like to attend is most welcome.
Telephone Campaign 2020
Renewed thanks to all our alumni who took part in last year's Telephone Campaign: having conversations with our student callers, donating, and helping to support our Campaign for Christ's which focussed on our Student Support Initative. Over the two weeks of the campaign last year, 459 alumni were called and £239,869 was raised, with all gifts being used to provide bursaries for the best and brightest through their time at Christ's, and ensuring that all our students can thrive at Cambridge without the burden of financial worries.
It's now almost time to start thinking about 2020! This year the campaign will run from 17-31 March and our students are looking forward to talking to many of you then.
More information about the Telephone Campaign can be found here.

Lady Margaret Lecture 2020
We are delighted that this year's Lady Margaret Lecture will be given by Professor Sir Michael Edwards (Honorary Fellow). The lecture, entitled On Not Writing Poetry at the Brasserie Lipp, is a view from the inside of poetry and of its place in the world, through a creative journey, leading to the writing of poetry in French followed by a recent return to English. It will take place on Wednesday 26 February 2020 from 5.30-7pm in the Yusuf Hamied Theatre. All are welcome to attend. Information on the event can be found here.

College Sport
Christ's sports teams have been enjoying great success recently! This term our Tennis teams were victorious in their matches against Girton, which means that they are through to the first round of Cuppers. In rowing, M1 came 12th place out of 113 boats in the Newnham Head, with a time of 07:11. All boats are now getting ready for Lent Bumps which starts on 25 February. Finally, our Women's Badminton, Men's Football and Basketball teams all won their matches over the past couple of weeks. Well done to all!
