Welcome from the Master

Welcome to the autumn edition of our Christ's College alumni e-newsletter.

Many of you will already have heard the very sad news that our Head Porter, Jeremy Taylor, passed away on the 19 September after a short illness.

Jeremy joined the College as Head Porter in 1989, following a career in the Merchant Navy where he had risen from Deck Apprentice to Ship's Master.

He took a keen interest in our students from Matriculation through to Graduation and then as alumni, and under his leadership our Porters were recognised as the most helpful and supportive in Cambridge.  Jeremy was a calm, friendly and reassuring presence for all of us in College. He will be greatly missed by generations of students, staff, fellows and alumni. 

I am looking forward to meeting with some of you at our Distinguished Speakers Dinner on the 21 October and others at the Winter Drinks Reception on the 27 November.

Jeremy Taylor - Memorial

The College plans to hold a memorial service for Jeremy in the Chapel soon. If you would like to be emailed with the date once it has been set, please email ra371@cam.ac.uk.

Jeremy was a keen sportsman and some fellows and alumni have made donations to establish a Jeremy Taylor Memorial Fund to support sporting activities in College.

September Reunions

We were delighted to welcome back so many alumni and guests to College for our September reunion events this year.

As well as two reunion dinners, alumni and guests also attended a Friends of the Old Library event featuring the popular 'Past Masters' exhibition

and an alumni buffet lunch to coincide with the Alumni Weekend. We hope everyone who came back to Christ's has taken some great memories away with them.

Sponsor a book

This year's Friends of the Old Library event saw the launch of a new scheme to support the conservation of the rare and special books that are homed at Christ's. 

From as little as £100, those interested can sponsor a specific title from a range of books identified by Library staff as requiring urgent conservation.

Winter Drinks Reception  27 November

This year's annual Winter Drinks Reception is taking place at the Oxford and Cambridge Club in London on Wednesday 27 November.

This event is always popular and is a great opportunity to network and catch up with College friends in the run-up to the festive period.

Tickets are £30.00 per person, and places can either be booked online or by emailing alumni@christs.cam.ac.uk. 

Christ's at the Varsity Match,  Twickenham 

The 2013 Varsity squad features not one but two Christ's members - both Didi Akinluyi (m.2005) and Nick Codrington (m.2010) could be playing on the 12 December, as the light blues take on Oxford in the annual match. If you would like to attend and cheer on our side, tickets can be purchased for £50.00 which includes a top price match ticket, a free pint/glass of wine and exclusive access to the Blues Village with live music, great food and bars. Further information and online booking. 

Medical Alumni Event - London

Alumni who studied medicine, or who have gone on to work in a medical discipline are warmly invited to join the CCMAA Steering Group for an event to be held in

University College London on 11 December. There will be a number of talks and an informal Dinnner for those who are interested afterwards. For information and to book a place.

The 2013 Christ's College Magazine has now been posted out to all the alumni we have correct address details for. You can also view the Magazine online here.

Christ's College May Ball 2014

Christ's will be holding its biennial May Ball next year and we are working with the May Ball committee to ensure that alumni will be able to book tickets.

Once we have the date for the ticket launch, we will include it in the Winter e-newsletter and on the College website, so watch this space!
